Rays Refereeing Tips

RAY'S REFEREEING TIPS
Team
To Panel 4,5 and all 1st years who attended the final training night of the year as a group – well done. You produced some good outcomes which I trust you will put in place over the next few weeks as we all find the games drying up quickly around us. Enclosed is some of the suggestions identified last Monday:
Pre game day
Have a note book and record three “goals” or challenges for your game ( That you can measure after the game)
Pre match:
“Getting the teams out on time for the kickoff”
- Move your watch forward 2 mins
- Meet the coach and syncronise your watches
- Establish when you would like the teams to be on the field ( 2min before kick off)
- Identify your Touch Judge – Remind him of the key role. If it is the coach – the role is to Be the TJ and he cannot “coach” eg tell his players to get back – chase etc.
- Remind the coach that everyone must be behind the ropes and on the same side of the field ( Junior tournament – they are allowed one coach to be roaming the sideline)
During the Match
- Remember when the halfback has his hands on the ball – it is your trigger to MOVE with the pass
- Penalties: There are many times you can blow the whistle – but remember the young players do not have any malice in what they do.
Recommendation:
Technical – You observe the problem
Tactical-- Does it really matter?
Management-- Play on – talk on the run – or penalize because it deprived the opposition of the ball.
Those doing Junior Rugby over the next few weeks: ยท
Meet at the respective club rooms for a briefing and pick up the score cards
- Keep the score
- 3 Red socks can play at one time
- Red socks cannot not be first receiver – Lineout – No 8 – penalties and free kicks – But they can receive a kick and run with the ball.
Enjoy your weekend
