PRESIDENTS REPORT
2010/2011 SEASONS
The time has come for me to say farewell as your President, and welcome in the new one. But, before that happens, I have a few things that I would like to say.
Firstly, to all Referees of this Association, ‘thank you’ for the fine job that once again you all have done, on and off the field in 2010, and in 2011. It makes me so proud to be associated with you.
I have travelled all over the North Island with my job this year, and wherever I am, I push out the name of our Association, and the very kind comments I get back as to our organisation, our training, and our on paddock refereeing skills is always of the highest .We are recognised as having one of the best Associations in the country, if not the best. To our Committee, what can I say except I have never worked with, or seen, a higher committed, harder working, group of dedicated guys than those who are looking after our Association. No amount of praise would be enough as thanks for the dedication shown by these guys.
To all prize winners, congratulations, and especially to David Dryden, I couldn’t think of a better person to have this new cup presented to. I remember when I arrived in North Harbour from Hamilton, and one of the first people I had the pleasure of meeting was David, thrusting out a book of raffle tickets at me!
Jim Kane, what a great guy this man is, as is his wife Marion. Jim never stops working for the betterment of the Association, whether its new gear, tickets, minutes, emails, comms.gear, visitors, the rugby union, 7’s tournaments, whatever, there is Jim and his backup, Marion. We owe you two a hellova lot!!
The same goes for James Slater, Barry Coles, Danny Meades, Brian Capper, John Harland, and of course, that man of action and coaching, Ray Garrett.
Speaking about Ray, his enthusiasm has never waned, from the first day he started, up to now, he has been the same, bounces around all over the place, getting his knowledge about the laws and positional play through. Long may you do it Ray!
There are of course, other team players who do not ‘standout’ but without them we would not get things done. These are the likes of Colin Cowie, Graham Moonie, Peter Monti, [bless you!] Tony Adolph, Mike Dow, Chris Frazerhurst, Patrick Goldfinch, Cam Piggott, [Council of clubs] Colin Pretorius and his wife Kathie, [photos and montage] Greg Watson,
Then of course we have the individual coaches, guys who give up their time to coach other up and coming referees, and then go off to do their own games.
Also, the ‘top’ coaches who have done a great job for New Zealand and overseas Referees, Alan Riley , Dick Ross, and to a lesser but just as important role, Chris Frazerhurst, Brett Fricker, and until he moved to BOP., Paul Greenstreet.
Also, all the coaches who go out every weekend, wet or shine from 9.00am onwards to watch and advise every Referee.
Special mention must go to our Lady Refs, the job you do is great, and the spectators enjoy seeing you out there doing it as good as the men. A special mention also to the work put in by Patrick Goldfinch and Graham Moonie in organising Sub Controllers and Assistant Referees, and of course, all those who filled in as Sub controllers and AR’s.
Also, a mention of our Life members, Alan Thompson, Paddy Barratt, Riley Bell, Paul Greenstreet, Chris Frazerhurst, Graeme Marston, Peter Monti, Graham Moonie, Bruce Morrison, and the ‘new boy’ Dick Ross.
I have enjoyed being your President, and working, [when I could] with the Committee, and as said, I wish the incoming President, all the best, it is great to be President of the best Association in New Zealand.
Before closing I wish to comment on the sudden passing of an ex member of ours, Henry Wilcox. Henry had moved down to Christchurch, as he was a carpenter, looking for work when he had a massive heart attack, from which he never recovered.
Yours sincerely,
Graeme Marston,
President,
North Harbour Rugby Referees Association.

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
North Harbour Rugby Referee Association
Annual General Meeting
October 2011
The North Harbour Rugby Referee’s Association again saw a challenging but successful 2011 season. A compressed club season due to World Cup 2011 presented opportunity which many referee’s accepted and the growth of the individuals once again must be congratulated.
To our Sponsors, I wish to thank you for your continued support. Financial pressures continue to be a challenge. We lost The Graeme Dorreen Family Trust at the beginning of the year, I would like to thank Graeme for supporting this association for the 5 previous years. To our Sponsors that are still with us, THANK YOU, for supporting this association and its members. We trust that we have represented your brand well throughout the year and look forward to a continuation of that relationship in the years ahead. Without your support we would find it extremely difficult to retain, support and attract referees.
Principle Sponsor - AMI Insurance
Supporting Sponsors - Harcourts, Cooper & Co, New Brew Tavern,
Support Sponsor - Northcross Physiotherapy
Our positive relationship with the North Harbour Rugby Union continues to develop. The NHRU had an extremely challenging year and we are sorry to see the departure of Kim Cordes to Australia. She has been excellent to work with, an excellent conduit between the Union and the Referee’s. Kim, we wish you and Andrew all t5he very best. To Brett Hollister, Mark Mayerhoffer, Ray Garrett Miles Marcroff, and Denis Henderson, THANK YOU again for the support of the Referee Association. Ray continues to deliver with an unparallel passion that keeps not only us on our toes but the clubs, schools and Union as well. We are aware of the challenging times you are experiencing but want to reiterate that the positive and open communication processes continue to develop a productive working relationship.
We continue to hold excellent relationships with the New Zealand, other Referee associations and not least, with the Rugby Clubs and Schools Rugby Associations on the shore.
To your Executive, I want to again commend them to you. They are a great bunch of guy’s that again have shown an unquestionable desire to continue to build a successful Association. It has again been a very industrious year, endeavouring to get the mix right. Monday meeting content/subjects, the right training program in place that meets all demands, individual and mass, right panel structure to meet game appointments and referee ability, maintaining an eye on the dollar, attraction and retention management and delivering sponsorship return through ensuring that the Association meets its contractual requirements.
This year was Graeme’s last as President and I wish to thank him for the positive role delivered over the past two years. I am sure that he will remain in the wings to ensure that this association continues to deliver for the members.
This year also was John Harland’s last in the Coaching and Development portfolio. He has done a fantastic job now for the past 5 years. His contribution has been of the highest level and finds now that it is time to hand over to ensure ‘freshness’ stays within the portfolio. John, thank you for the hours put in especially when over the last 12 months you had some really challenging business concerns to overcome.
I again ask you to fully support your Executive in its decision making. Please do not be backward in engaging constructive discussion to ensure all ideas and concerns are voiced.

Graeme Marston - President
Jim Kane - Secretary
Danny Meade - Relationships and Communications Manager
Brian Capper - Financial Controller

John Harland - Coaching and Development Director
Selectors, Coaches and Draws Administration
To the Selectors, John and Dick, thank you for the added work put in behind the scenes to ensure that our referee’s are appointed appropriately. There are always challenges but it is the opportunity to take a risk here and there to give a referee ’a go’ that makes the role an engaging one, especially when they come off. Thank you again Peter Monti and Colin Cowie for the continuation of the role undertaken during the year. A thankless one at times but I am sure that in most cases the balance of appointments was achieved under your watchful eye. Thank you also to the Panel Convenors. Your assistance in management of the groups and leading Monday discussion has aided in the quality output achieved on and off the field. To all the Coach’s that week in and week out stand on the sideline for generally not just one game but two, thank you for the input you have had on individuals growth. Constructive feedback grows a passion to deliver better next time around and we have certainly seen that given the competition we had for the Final’s positions this year. For the countless number of hours put in of your personal time, the association thanks you.
Referee Representatives.
To ensure that we are involved through a say in the direction of rugby on the Shore, please join with me in thanking a number of members that have put their hand up to publicly represent the association in 2011:

To all our awards winners, CONGRATULATIONS. This was a culmination of success that has not just been built up over this season but the others that have come before. It was a great night with special mention of Julian’s farewell, Steve Walsh’s Honorary Membership, Dick Ross’s Life Membership and a new trophy for the ‘Journeyman’ in the association won by Dave Dryden. This has been a very successful year for the association. The Executive has again been focused on long term growth and building an association on the Shore that people respect and what to be a part of.
